Teen Monk Stabbed Nun To Death, Police Say

KENDALL, Fla. — Police arrested an 18-year-old monk Monday morning after a nun was found stabbed to death on the campus of a tight-knit private Catholic school.

Investigators say that Mykhaylo Kofel, of the Ukraine, is under arrest and has given a complete confession.

“This was not a random act of violence. The victim and the suspect knew each other,” said one investigator.

Kofel lived on the grounds of the Holy Cross Academy on Sunset Drive. Sister Michelle Lewis’ body was found Sunday in a home on the Academy’s campus by a school employee. Lewis would have turned 40 next month.

News of the killing took many at the small school by surprise.

“She never bothered anybody. She’s the last person I thought that would happen to,” one student said.

“She was very friendly, she was always smiling,” said another student.

Many parents kept their kids home Monday, coming by the school only to pick up homework assignments.
