Conn. church discovers embezzlement
ORANGE, Conn.
Leaders of a Connecticut church held an emergency meeting to tell members that a massive amount of money has disappeared from the church’s endowment and building funds.
Nearly 150 members of St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church in Orange gathered there Sunday night as church leaders described the embezzlement.
The New Haven Register reports that a church member who had access to both funds allegedly stole the money, and the theft could total more than $1 million. Church leaders would not identify the church member. No arrests have been made.
Church attorney Joseph Martini says the FBI is investigating.
The Register reports that church members may also have lost a lot of money, because the suspect also handled individuals’ retirement, college and investment accounts.
