Greek Orthodox priest arraigned on child porn charge
BANGOR (AP/WGME) — The Bangor priest charged with possession of child pornography and violation of privacy was arraigned by video from Penobscot County Jail on Wednesday.
A judge ordered Adam Metropoulos, 52, held on $100,000 cash bail or surety.
Bangor Police said the investigation started on Saturday when they heard from a woman who had been staying at the home of Metropolous and his wife. Sgt. Tim Cotton said she was taking a shower when she found a camera hidden in the bathroom.
Cotton said, with a search warrant, they also seized computers at Metropoulos’ home, and on them, found child pornography.
Prosecutors said on Wednesday that during the investigation, Metropoulos admitted to police that he had inappropriately touched two teenage boys in Bangor about five years ago. He has not been charged in that incident. Prosecutors said it’s still early in the investigation.
Metropoulos, originally from Michigan, was charged with a sex crime involving a child in Saginaw County in 1983. According to our media partners at the Bangor Daily News, he was convicted of that crime.
Metropoulos is suspended from his priestly duties at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, which he’s lead since 2001.
If he posts bail, he’s not allowed to have internet access or contact with anyone under 18.
Metropoulos is due back in court in November.
