Greek police has arrested Father Ephrem, the Father Superior of Watopedi monastery on Athon hill. This monastery owns the holy cincture of the Virgin Mary which was recently brought to Russia.

The Greek public prosecutor’s office accuses Father Ephrem of striking a number of deals in exchanging several cheap plots of land of Watopedi monastery for expensive property in Athens.

Investigators believe that these deals caused the loss of at least 100mln euro for the government. Father Ephrem himself has declared his innocence and rejected the charges against him. He will stay under arrest until the end of the court proceedings.
